Non-English Patent Services Gaining Ground in China
Evalueserve-Shanghai, China, May 07, 2008 : China’s huge consumer market and large manufacturing
base are rapidly growing in importance worldwide. As a result, foreign companies are increasingly
looking for service providers such as Evalueserve to search non-English patent and
non-patent databases. Prior Art Searches (36 percent of all patent projects)
and Competitor Analysis services (25 percent) are especially in high demand.
During the past 18 months, Evalueserve has observed a substantial increase in the
demand for patent research conducted in the major Asian languages of Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
“Searching the Chinese patent database and analyzing patent documents from a strategy perspective
is what we are focusing on. We started out by helping Western law firms and corporations to
better understand Chinese prior art. We soon realized that it is imperative for patent
and non-patent searches to be conducted in Mandarin because coverage in English is minimal.
In order to cater efficiently to the needs of domestic and foreign clients, a patent research
professional should be fluent in Mandarin and English, and should also have a sound technical background.
A large talent pool in Shanghai allows Evalueserve to leverage these capabilities and effectively carry out
prior art searches, patent landscape and claims overlap analysis,” says Ram Deshpande, Senior Manager of the
Intellectual Property Division of Evalueserve China.
All members of Evalueserve’s Intellectual Property (IP) team in China are fluent in
Mandarin and English, and some also speak a third language such as Korean or Japanese.
In China, patent databases and several non patent databases are available online in
Mandarin, and Evalueserve’s multilingual team conducts searches in all databases
including the China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. Since complete English
translations of Chinese patents are usually not available online, on-the-ground
representation is essential. As multinational companies increasingly start looking to
patent their inventions in China, the unique research and analysis proposition that
Evalueserve offers gives these companies an advantage over its competitors.
Evalueserve was the first Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) firm to start offering
patent research services from China in September 2006. This team has 20 professionals and
collaborates closely with more than 250 professionals in Evalueserve’s main operation center
in India.
