According to a research conducted by Informa Telecoms and Media, approximately 54 million digital TV households are expected to be added in 2007, bringing the global total to 239 million.
These figures were published in the seventh edition of Informa’s Global Digital TV report, which also forecasted that the digital TV penetration level will reach a figure of 22 percent by the year-end. North America is expected to lead with a penetration level of more than 68 percent, followed by Western Europe with 52 percent penetration. The net additions to digital TV households are estimated to be 52 million in 2008.
The report also states that by 2012, 43 percent of the world’s TV households will receive digital signals, which translates into 504 million households. These figures indicate that digital growth will accelerate as the decade progresses, especially outside North America and Western Europe. Between 2007 and 2012, more than 264 million digital TV households will be added, thereby more than doubling the total.
Table 1 indicates the break-up of digital TV household consumption in 2012.
